They knew that the Sun’s path across the sky, length of daylight, and location of sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. The people of ancient cultures used the sky as a clock and calendar. ![]() We will also feel cooler days with chillier winds, and dry, falling leaves. In the Northern hemisphere, the September equinox marks the start of a period bringing us later sunrises and earlier sunsets. But on these special days – the spring and fall equinoxes – the Sun shines almost equally on the Northern and Southern hemispheres. That’s because Earth’s axis is tilted with respect to the Sun-Earth plane. The rest of the year, the Sun shines unevenly over the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This only happens twice in Earth’s year-long trip around the Sun. Spring twilight at the North Pole begins a few weeks before the vernal, or spring, equinox in March, when the Sun rises above the horizon again. ![]() Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechĪlong with marking the beginning of astronomical fall, the Sun will be exactly above Earth’s equator, moving from north to south, making day and night nearly equal in length – about 12 hours – throughout the world.Īt the North Pole, over the upcoming days, the Sun will sink below the horizon for a kind of twilight from now until sometime in October when it will be completely dark, according to NASA solar scientist Mitzi Adams. During the equinoxes, both hemispheres receive equal amounts of daylight. An illustration of the March (spring) and September (fall or autumn) equinoxes. 1, however, the September (or fall) equinox gives us the green light to welcome the astronomical fall season in the Northern Hemisphere (and astronomical spring season in the Southern Hemisphere). Be sure your vehicle is in its lowest gear so its engine will act as a brake. In meteorology, the fall season begins on Sept. Use them intermittently but firmly as needed. Coming down it is a good idea to stop half way down and let your brakes cool down. The average gradient is 11.38% with some parts up to 14.66%. Over this distance the elevation gain is 970 meters (3,182 ft). Starting at VT-7A road, the ascent is 8.52km (5.3 miles) long. It’s said to be the hardest and steepest bike climb in Vermont. From the summit, you’re able to see five different states as well as Canada. The summit has a full 360-degree view of Vermont, the Adirondacks and New Hampshire. At the summit there are communication towers, a small, abandoned Cold War-era NORAD radar station and an un-manned info center with information about the mountain, the views and the history. As you drive up, there are several paved pull-off areas to park and enjoy some of the views. Located within the Green Mountain National Forest, there are wide views from the side of the road as it goes along the top of the ridge. ![]() It is typically breezy all year long, so a light jacket is a good thing to have with you on this drive. From Memorial Day Weekend to October 31 st is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily (weather permitting). Vehicles carrying bikes, canoes or kayaks are not permitted. Buses, RVs, or vans over 8 persons are strictly prohibited. Set high in the Taconic Range, part of the Appalachian Mountains, the road to the summit is closed from November through April. The road is owned by the Carthusian Order and remains as the longest, privately owned, paved toll road in the United States. The road is 8,36km (5.2 miles) long starting right off of Route 7A, in Sunderland (to the south of Manchester). Tucked away on the southern part of Vermont, the road to the summit is totally paved. Can you drive to the top of Mount Equinox?
